The aim (excuse the pun) is to shoot at the targets, or "clay pigeons", using a shotgun with the intention of hitting as many as possible. The targets are typically made of a mixture of pitch and limestone and moulded into the shape of small, round discs. These discs are then launched into the air at varying speeds and angles using mechanical traps.

There are various disciplines within clay shooting, each with its own rules and challenges. Some popular disciplines include:

• Trap Shooting: Targets are launched away from the shooter at various angles.
• Skeet Shooting: Targets are launched from two fixed stations at opposite ends of a semicircular range, resulting in them crossing paths in the center.
• Sporting Clays: Mimics hunting scenarios with targets launched from multiple stations, simulating the flight patterns of different game birds.
