Re-Enactment Insurance FAQ
Re-enactors aim to re-create historical battles and events as accurately as possible by following a plan or script set out by the event organisers. Historical re-enactments cover a wide span of history, from the Roman Empire right through to the major world wars. Participants don authentic military uniforms from the era and use combat methods and duelling practices from the appropriate time period. Weaponry can include swords, axes, maces, bows and arrows and shields and armour as well as more modern muskets, rifles and other blank firing firearms. Often re-enactments take place as close to the original battlefield or site as possible to increase the authenticity.
Living history, unlike re-enactment, does not focus on following a fixed plot but on building an immersive historical living environment and giving participants a sense of stepping back in time. Players take pride in wearing handmade historical clothing, eating foods available during the era and using historical tools and techniques such as weaving, dyeing, leatherwork and woodwork. Sometimes living history may also include bushcraft or historical hunting and trapping techniques and well as working with animals.
Although weaponry used in re-enactment, living history, LARP and cosplay is typically blunted, foam edged or rubber tipped, and combat techniques are carefully taught to minimise the risk of injury, these activities still involve an inherent level of risk. The use of historical tools also carries additional hazards as many were not originally designed with modern safety standards in mind.
Many re-enactment and living history events are also open to the public. Appropriate insurance can help protect Members against a range of risks associated with participating in Insured Activities. Our Master Policies cover Members for re-enactment and living history as well as live action role play (LARP) and cosplay. Every member is covered for:
- £12 million Public Liability Insurance
- £10,000 Personal Accident Insurance
C³ Memberships provides cover for the use of blunted, foam, latex and rubber edged / tipped weaponry, props and blank-firing weapons. It also covers the use of authentic hand tools and the caged / penned display and supervised handling of tame domestic animals up to a maximum weight of 250kg. For more information about the Country Sports Insurances included, please have a look at the Insured Activities list.
Country Cover Club offers Syndicate Membership for groups of 10 or more people at a discounted rate of £29.95 per Member per annum. As well as the standard £12 million Public Liability cover, Syndicates benefit from £10 million Employers' Liability Insurance for paid and voluntary employees and the option to insure guests from just £3.95 per guest per day.
To find out more or to make a Syndicate / Group application, please visit the Syndicates & Groups page.
Yes, many re-enactors are involved with multiple groups and C³ Membership is a great way to ensure you are covered no matter where you are in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Whether you are practising in your back garden, involved in a small group or taking part in a national event, our Master Policies mean you are protected. To find out more, please visit the Country Sports Insurance page.
Insurance for re-enactment can vary a lot depending on the level of cover and the provider. However, it does not have to be expensive and it is important to make sure you are protected if you have an accident or if a claim is made against you.
Country Cover club offers individual Membership for £35.95 per annum. We also offer short term Memberships: if you just want cover for the summer, our six month membership costs £29.95 or, if you are attending a one-off event, you can choose our two day Membership for £19.95.
